Warts Basics
Although there are some exceptions, most warts are generally harmless. They are small, typically painless growths on skin that are caused by a virus called human papillomavirus (HPV). Warts can easily spread from one part of your body to another. It is more uncommon for them to spread from person to person.
Typical warts are raised round or oval growths that grow on parts of your skin that have a rough surface. There are about 10 different types of warts including: common warts that usually appear on hands and do not cause pain, flat warts that generally appear on the face and forehead, genital warts, plantar warts found on the soles of feet, and subungual and periungual warts that generally appear under or around the fingernails and toenails.
Wart Treatment
It is important that you do not attempt to remove a wart by yourself using burning, cutting, tearing, picking, or other methods. While over-the-counter medications are available for wart removal, it is advised that you never use them on your face or genitals. Treatments depend on the type of wart that you have. Some treatment options include special foot cushions, strong prescription medications, blistering solutions, freezing, burning, laser treatment, and immunotherapy, which causes and allergic reaction that helps to eliminate the wart.
